Chapter Seven â Getting Stuck
Amy came back into Rebekahâs living room, tucking her phone away. âDanvers is on board,â she announced. âHeâs going to poke through a few files and send me anything that looks like it could match. He might even be able to get a copy of the report on your disappearance, Meg.â
âIt would be good if he does,â Rebekahâs muffled voice came from where she was bent over the open filing cabinet. âI dislike having to rely on newspaper coverage.â
âUmâ¦what did Danvers say when you used the F-word?â I said.
It was hard to picture Amyâs debonair and handsome detective friend being at all cool with the idea of faeries. Weâd already spent the early part of the evening watching Rebekah throw her toys out of the pram at Steveâs suggestion, and it had taken half an hour to talk her around to the idea of a semi-corporeal type of cryptid; one which gave rise to human legends of wee folk and creatures that lounged around in skimpy clothes on toadstools. I never wanted to witness that squabble again. Next time, I was sticking to coming in and taking photographs of weird monsters after theyâd all had their regularly scheduled argument about the nature of reality.
Amy smiled wryly. âI didnât actually use the word faery. I just said that I might have a lead on the missing girl and that he probably wanted me to handle this side of things.â
âAnd how did the detective react to that?â Steveâs voice had grown noticeably colder. Well, it had to everyone except Amy, who was far too amused by her conversation with DS Danvers to pick up on it.
She laughed. âPretty sure I actually heard him shudder when I mentioned my special skill set.â
âDonât frighten him off,â Rebekah said crisply. âHeâs the only police contact weâve got.â
âSince we keep solving cases and giving him the credit, Iâd have to do more than that to scare him off,â Amy scoffed. âBesides, a little revenge is only fair. He did say he never wanted to see me again just because I rang a few bells.â
âActual bells?â I hadnât heard this story.
Amy nodded. âChurch bells, although I didnât know I was doing it at the time. I was still in denial about my telekinesis back then. But it saved Danversâ life, so it was kind of rude of him to pick up his skirts and run for the hills.â
âSuch squeamish youths are not worth your time,â Steve muttered. âI donât care how good his shoulders look in a suit.â
âIâm not following,â I admitted.
âSteve is referring to me mentioning one of Danversâ finer points,â Amy said. âHe still is very nice to look at, but that ship has sailed. Or sunk, depending on how you look at it.â
âThank heavens for small mercies.â This time Steveâs comment was muttered so low, I thought I was probably the only one who heard it.
I bit back a laugh, raising my eyes just in time to see Amy drag her gaze away from Steve, who was resolutely reading through one of the many Blackthorn journals.
